The role
Air conditioning is the newest part of what we do and it is growing fastest. You would be installing split systems in London homes: the indoor unit, the outdoor unit, the pipework between them, the commissioning, and the conversation at the end that leaves the customer confident using it.
The work is domestic rather than commercial, so it is a different property and a different problem every time — a loft conversion one day, a Victorian terrace with nowhere obvious to put a condenser the next. That is the interesting part.
It is not only new installs. You will also be diagnosing faults on systems already fitted, which means reading schematics and working out what is actually wrong rather than swapping parts until it stops.
What you will be doing
- Installing residential split air conditioning systems end to end
- Mounting indoor units and siting outdoor units
- Running refrigerant pipework and cabling
- Arranging condensate drainage
- Handling refrigerant in line with F-Gas requirements — recovery, charging and leak testing
- Commissioning and testing completed systems
- Diagnosing faults on existing systems, using schematics and technical documentation
- Replacing components — compressors, fans, filters and controls
- Servicing and preventative maintenance visits
- Handing over to the customer and showing them how to use it
- Keeping accurate records of each installation
What we are looking for
- Proven air conditioning installation experience — this is not a trainee position
- A current F-Gas qualification, such as City & Guilds 2079 (Category I)
- A working understanding of refrigerant handling and the regulations around it
- Able to read schematics and wiring diagrams and diagnose from them
- Confident working in people’s homes and leaving them as you found them
- Able to work neatly, and to explain your work to someone who is not an engineer
- A full UK driving licence
