Replacing an old fuse box with a modern consumer unit.

From £650. You see your price before giving us any personal details.

  • 12-month workmanship guarantee
  • Emergency call-outs

The consumer unit is the box the electricity comes into, and where each circuit is protected. Older installations use rewireable fuses; modern ones use circuit breakers and RCD protection, which disconnects the supply fast enough to prevent a serious shock.

Replacing one means the whole installation has to be tested, because the new unit has to protect circuits that are safe to connect to it.

The price you see is based on what you tell us. If our engineer finds that more work or materials are needed, they will explain the cost and get your agreement before carrying on — nothing is added without you agreeing to it first.

Do you need this?

You might need this if

  • No RCD protection on the installation
  • Breakers that trip repeatedly
  • An electrical inspection that recommended replacement
  • Adding a major circuit, such as an EV charger or a shower

Questions

Common questions

How long will the power be off?

Usually most of the working day. The engineer will let you know before starting so you can plan around it.

What is an RCD and why does it matter?

A residual current device cuts the supply within milliseconds if it detects current leaking to earth — the situation that causes a fatal shock. Older fuse boxes have no equivalent.

What if a fault is found in my wiring?

It has to be resolved before the new unit can be signed off, because the unit protects those circuits. You will be told what has been found and what it means before anything is done.
