The role
This is a fault-finding job as much as a fitting one. Anybody can swap a part; we are after someone who enjoys working out why it failed and fixing it properly the first time.
You will be out in London homes every day — boilers that have stopped, systems that never get properly hot, controls nobody can make sense of. Most of it is straightforward. Some of it is the job somebody else has already had a go at.
The office handles the scheduling, the customer calls and the paperwork. We price the work before you arrive and agree anything extra with the customer first, so you are not the one having an awkward conversation about money on a doorstep. Your day is the engineering and the explaining.
What you will be doing
- Diagnosing boiler breakdowns and heating faults, and repairing them properly
- Servicing domestic boilers and gas appliances
- Carrying out gas safety checks and issuing the relevant paperwork
- Boiler installations and replacements
- Fitting and setting up smart controls and heating upgrades
- Power flushing and system cleansing
- Working on pumps, valves, radiators and hot water systems
- Explaining what you have found in terms the customer can follow
- Flagging anything that needs agreeing before you do it
- Keeping accurate records of each job
- Working safely, and to the standards the work is held to
What we are looking for
- Several years of domestic gas experience — this is not a trainee position
- Current gas qualifications appropriate to domestic service and repair work
- Gas Safe registered, or eligible to register
- Genuine diagnostic ability — the reason it failed, not just the part that failed
- The patience to explain things to someone who is not an engineer
- Organised and self-motivated; you will be running your own day
- Pride in the standard of your work
- A full UK driving licence
