Relining repairs a damaged drain from the inside. A resin-impregnated liner is drawn into the pipe, shaped against the existing wall and left to cure, forming a new pipe within the old one.

The attraction is what it avoids. Where a damaged drain runs under a driveway, a patio, a conservatory or a road, excavating it means taking up whatever is on top and putting it back afterwards. Relining can often deal with the same fault without any of that.

It is not right for every damaged drain. A pipe that has collapsed completely, lost its shape, or is obstructed along its length may not take a liner at all, and some layouts and junctions make it impractical. A survey is what settles it — which is why we will not tell you relining is the answer before anyone has looked.

The price you see is based on what you tell us. If our engineer finds that more work or materials are needed, they will explain the cost and get your agreement before carrying on — nothing is added without you agreeing to it first.

Do you need this?

You might need this if

  • A survey that has found cracks, open joints or root ingress
  • Damage under a driveway, patio, extension or road
  • Repeated root intrusion at the same joint
  • A drain that would be expensive or disruptive to dig up
  • A section deteriorating but not yet collapsed

What the work involves

Roughly what to expect. The exact steps vary with the job.

  1. Step 1:The drain is surveyed to confirm whether it can take a liner at all
  2. Step 2:The pipe is cleaned out, usually by jetting, so the liner can bond
  3. Step 3:The liner is drawn into position along the damaged section
  4. Step 4:It is shaped against the existing pipe wall and left to cure
  5. Step 5:The finished lining is inspected by camera before the job is signed off

Questions

Common questions

Can any drain be relined?

No, and we would be wary of anyone who says otherwise. A pipe that has collapsed, deformed or is heavily obstructed may not accept a liner, and some junction arrangements make it impractical. A camera survey is what tells us whether yours is suitable.

How is it different from a repair?

A repair usually means digging down to the damaged section and replacing it. Relining forms a new pipe inside the existing one, so what is above the drain stays where it is. Which makes more sense depends on the fault, the depth, and what is on top of it.

How long does it last?

A cured liner is a structural repair rather than a patch, and is expected to last a long time. We are not going to quote you a number of years for your drain — that depends on the pipe, the ground and what goes down it, and any figure we gave would be a guess dressed up as a fact.

Will it make the drain narrower?

Slightly, because the liner sits inside the existing pipe. In practice the smoother bore usually offsets it, and a relined drain often flows better than the cracked and root-filled one it replaced.

How do I know whether I need this or a repair?

You do not need to decide. The survey shows what is wrong and where, and the engineer explains which approaches are actually available for your drain and what each involves.
